What's New in Health
NYS requires all student athletes to have a current physical on file. The physical must be dated no more than 12 months prior to the start of the particular season. The school physician will come prior to Fall, Winter, and Spring sports to conduct physicals on athletes who need them at no charge to you. If you prefer to have a private physician conduct the physical please make sure it is sent to my attention prior to the season.
Impact (concussion) testing is required every two years and/or after any suspected concussion. This is a computerized test that evaluates things such as memory and reaction time. A baseline exam is done first. If an athlete sustains a concussion, the test is repeated to evaluate changes to help determine their readiness to return to play. Beginning this school year, all athletes will be taking their baseline tests in 7th, 9th, and 11th grade, even if they have had a test within two years. This will help establish a more organized system of recognizing which athletes need to repeat their tests.
A reminder, any student who is suspected of having a concussion will be removed from play (sports and gym class) and must be evaluated by a doctor. After a doctor has cleared them to return, they will need to complete a progressive return to play and repeat their Impact testing prior to returning to full play.
