Algebra Description and Outline

Mrs. Garrow

The primary purpose of this course is to formalize and extend the mathematics that students learned in the middle grades.  The material covered in this course will prepare students for the Algebra I Regents exam.  On this exam students are expected not only to solve algebra problems and answer algebra-related questions but also to explain and justify their reasoning.

Topics covered include, but are not limited, to the following list.

  • Algebra Basics - Expressions, properties, graphing

  • Multi-step Equations & Inequalities - Including absolute value and fractional, exponent rules

  • Relations and Functions - graphing, transformations

  • Linear Equations - graphing, slope, parallel and perpendicular lines

  • System of Equations & Inequalities - Solve by substitution, elimination, graphingg

  • Exponent Rules - product rule, negative exponents, radicals

  • Polynomials & Factoring - Add/Subtract/Multiply/Divide(A/S/M/D)

  • Quadratic Equations - Solving by Quadratic formula and factoring, linear vs. quadratic, graphing

  • Rational Expressions & Equations - simplifying, A/S/M/D
